Abstract

Environmental Microbiology. Insight into the dynamic interaction between human activities and the manifestation of infectious diseases in humans and animals. To know viruses as special forms of infectious agents. Special emphasis is given to emerging diseases such as SARS and avian flu as well as old diseases, such as rabies and anthrax.

Content

The lecture focusses on the manifestation of infectious diseases under human influence. Special emphasis is given to viruses, representing a special form of infectious agents. Topics treated are listed below: 1) Water pollution and microbial water quality 2) Polio viruses and poliomyelitis: final stage of global eradication? 3) Avian flu and emergence of pandemic human influenza 4) Emergence of the SARS-coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome) 5) Rabies, a classic zoonotic disease: viruses transmitted from vertebrates to man 6) Arboviruses: viruses transmitted from arthropodes to man 7) Bacillus anthracis: the fear of a possible bioweapon
