Abstract
Basic organic chemistry I: molecular structure. Bonding and functional groups; nomenclature; resonance and aromaticity; stereochemistry; conformation; strength of bonds; organic acids and bases; organic reactions, carbanions, carbenium ions and radicals, UV/VIS, IR, NMR spectroscopies, Mass spectrometry.
Objective
Understanding the basic concepts and definitions of organic chemistry. Knowledge of the functional groups and classes of compounds that are important in biological systems. Understanding the relationship between structure and reactivity.
Content
Organic molecules: Isolation, separation and characterization of organic compounds. Classical structure theory: constitution, covalent bonds, bonding geometry, functional groups, classes of compounds, nomenclature. Electron delocalization: resonance, aromaticity. Stereochemistry: chirality, configuration, topicity. Conformational dynamics. Bond energies, non covalent interactions. Organic acids and bases. Organic reactions: intermediates, radicals, carbenium ions, and carbanions.
