Abstract

During this lecture course an insight to the systematics, taxonomy, and ecology of selected benthic macroinvertebrate groups will be provided. It will allow one to identify benthic invertebrates to genus or species level.

Objective

The aim of this lecture course is to get a deeper insight to the systematics, taxonomy, and ecology of aquatic macroinvertebrates. The course provides the required basis to allow you to identify the main benthic inverteberate groups.

Content

The lecture course starts with a comprehensive introduction to the systematics, morphology, and ecology of benthic invertebrates. During the second part of the lecture course, students will learn how to determine benthic invertebrates using different identification keys. A collection of live and fixed invertebrates is available for practical work.

Resources

Lecture Notes

For each taxonomic group a skript including general ecological and taxonomix information and an identification key will be distributed.
