Abstract
This lecture introduces selected aspects of the agro food chain in tropical environments. It will highlight some of the challenges faced by the actors involved in the agro food chain (from the farmer to the consumer) and some of the possible solutions. The focus of the lecture is on natural sciences, the economic aspects of the agro food chain will not be discussed.
Objective
This lecture aims at introducing some aspects of the agro food chain, i.e. from the soil to crop and animal production, food processing and to human nutrition with a focus on tropical environments. It will highlight, based on case studies, some of the challenges faced by the actors involved in the agro food chain (from the farmer to the consumer) in tropical environments and some of the possible solutions. Given the limited time available for this lecture only natural sciences aspects will be covered and it will not be possible to discuss the economic part of the problem. The students interested to deepen their knowledge in this area are advised to visit the appropriate lectures offered in food and resources economy.
