Abstract

Extensive presentation of Baroque, Classical and Romantic Harmony. Practice in 4-part writing. Analysis of harmonic sequences illustrated by Master Compositions.

Objective

Understanding harmonic sequences in tonal music. Ability to write simple compositions.

Content

The theory of Harmony is that area of knowledge that offers insight into the workshop of composers of the last few centuries. This is not just mere theory: The 4-part setting will be practised in exercises step by step. Triads, 7th chords and their inversions, passing notes, Suspensions. Modulation, Alteration. Harmonisations of Melodies, realisation of a figured Bass. - Requirement: Attendance of course 1 or corresponding knowledge.

Extraneous publications are not required to follow the lectures. However, a vast array of books on music theory is available at local music stores for further reference.
