Content
The course in economics extends over two semesters. The focus during the winter term is on the introduction to economic theory and thought. These considerations provide the fundamental requirements for the analysis of land, habitation and space from an economic perspective in the summer term. The winter semester first focuses on markets. The course responds to problems such as: What factors drive supply and demand? How does a market work? Why do certain forms of markets lead to socially undesirable results? Our second subject area consists of economic problems such as unemployment and inflation. Finally, the course turns to the area of economic politics and the potential for successful intervention into markets. The course thereby is intended to foster an understanding of the interactions among various economic factors based on actual developments. There are many interactions between economic and social phenomena on the one hand, and the building and planning sector on the other. The construction sector is subject to various peculiarities. Our knowledge of the fundamental principles of markets allows for a profound examination of its cyclical and structural problems. The course also focuses on such markets as housing, land or credit, which are strongly connected to the building sector. We consider questions such as: which are the major problems of the land market? Which factors determine the price of land? What are the reasons for the huge differences between regional housing markets? Which are the primary difficulties in designing a reasonable rent policy. Finally, the courses discusses the main determinants of investment.
