Abstract

This class builds upon 251-0229 (Intro. to Stereoscopic Imaging) offered in the winter semester. Students continue the exploration of stereoscopic imaging started in the last semester and produce a stereoscopic film of 6-8 min duration.

Content

Human Vision with particular emphasis on stereopsis Video systems - analog and digital (e.g. PAL,Secam, NTSC, HDTV) Image encoding (e.g.mJPEG, DV, MPEG1,2,4, fractal, wavelet) Stereoscopic capture and display systems Development of sterescopic content Synopsis: Stereoscopic Imaging is a wonderful optical illusion having the capability to capti vate the viewer, providing images that are more stunning than real. We will explore, examine, study and create stereoscopic images, systems and productions in this course to better understand this phenomenon. The course consists of two components: weekly lectures about various aspects of vision, image file formats and compression, video systems and standards and a review of the various methods for creating the stereoscopic illusion. The second component is lab oriented. We will build prototypes, create working copies of previously invented systems, produce sterescopic content and have fun doing so. This is a "hands on" course for students in all areas who enjoy building and experimenting with real systems. We will provide some coverage of the theoretical aspects of the area, but we also intend to create wonderful new things.
