Objective

Introduction to many-particle quantum mechanics and relativistic single-particle physics. Familiarity with basic concepts such as symmetrized many-body wave functions for fermions and bosons, Pauli principle, second quantization, mean-field theory (Hartree-Fock), electromagnetic radiation field, interaction of radiation and matter, particles and anti-particles. Ability to use the formalism in simple applications.

Content

The description of identical particles leads us to the introduction of symmetrized wave functions for fermions and bosons. We discuss simple few-body problems (Helium atome, hydrogen molecule) und proceed with a systematic description of fermionic many body problems (Hartree-Fock approximation, screening, correlations with applications on atomes and the Fermi sea). The second quantization formalism allows for the description of the linear elastic chain, the radiation field. and the Fermi sea. We study the interaction of radiation and matter and the associated phenomena of radiative decay, light scattering, and the Lamb shift. We end with a discussion of relativistic one particle physics, the Klein-Gordon equation for spin-0 bosons and the Dirac equation describing spin-1/2 fermions.
