Abstract

Over two semesters the lecture provides insight into the biological and clinical bases of drug action. Basic concepts and theoretical knowledge of general pharmacology (pharmacodynamics, pharmakokinetics, human toxicology) are presented. The mechanism of action and the clinical use of the major classes of drugs are explained.

Objective

Understanding the biological mechanisms of drug action and toxicity on a molecular, cellular, and system’s oriented level. Acquisition of knowledge about the pathophysiology and pharmacology of disorders affecting major organ systems. Understanding modern methods for studying drug action in vivo and vitro.

Content

Each lecture provides basic experimental and clinical facts about a class of drugs or a major organ system (cardiovascular system, central and peripheral nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, immune system and endocrine systems). The main focus lies in the understanding of basic principles of drug action, based on biological and pathophysiological concepts. Further, the properties of major drugs in clinical use are discussed.
