Abstract

Allergic diseases are common and of increasing importance. In this course symptoms and management of allergies such as hay fever, asthma, eczema or food allergy are presesented. The importnat interactions between environmental factors such as air quality, climate, nutrition and form and frequency of allergic diseases will be discussed.

Objective

Knowledge of pathophysiology and forms of allergic diseases in humans, especially atopci diseases such as hay fever, allergic asthma, food allergy and eczema. Most important allergens of immediate and delayed type allergies should be known. Diagnostic and therapeutic management fo these diseases. Current knowledge about interactions between environemntal factors such as pollutuion, climate, socioeconomic conditions, nutrition and form and frequency of allergic diseases.

Content

Forms of allergic diseases. Definition of atopy and intolerance. Pathophysiology of immediate, IgE-mediated and delayed, T cell mediated allergic reactions. Epidemiology of allergic diseases in Switzerland and a global context. Most important allergens such as pollen, house dust mite, animal dander, moulds and contact allergens. Therapeutic approaches: Prevention, Drugs, specific immunotherapy. Interactions between climate, air pollution, hygienic conditions and allergic diseases.
