Abstract
Three aspects of Weyls’ mathematical and philosophical ideas are discussed:- The problem of a mathematical analysis of the continuum in relation to philosophical debates about the concept of intuition around 1900.- Weyl`s intuitionist notion of mathematics as an act and its philosophical background in Kant and Fichte.- Science as a symbolic construction and its anthropological implications.
Content
Hermann Weyl (1885 - 1955) gilt als der wohl bedeutendste Mathematiker in der Geschichte der ETH. Dass er auch philosophische Arbeiten verfasste, ist kaum bekannt. Dies ist umso verwunderlicher, als sie kein überflüssiges Ornament einer sonst strengen mathematischen Tätigkeit darstellen, sondern mit dieser in direktem Zusammenhang stehen und Züge eines einheitlichen philosophischen Programms erkennen lassen. Das Seminar soll drei Schwerpunkte von Weyls mathematisch-philosophischen Ansätzen herausarbeiten. Zunächst wird das Problem der mathematischen Analyse des Kontinuums behandelt und im philosophischen Kontext des Anschauungsbegriffs um 1900 situiert. Sodann geht es um Weyls intuitionistisch gefärbte Auffassung der Mathematik als Handlung, deren Wurzeln bei Kant und im Deutschen Idealismus liegen. Schliesslich wird der anthropologische und existenziale Horizont seines Verständnisses von Wissenschaft als symbolischer Konstruktion untersucht. Neben Weyls eigenen Texten werden im Seminar auch einschlägige Passagen von Kant, Fichte, Husserl, Heidegger und Whitehead diskutiert.
