A travers une série de portraits allant du moyen âge à nos jours, et signés Bossuet ou Diderot, Balzac ou Flaubert, Proust ou Céline, Robbe-Grillet ou Claude Simon par exemple, on se propose de suivre les métamorphoses d'un sous-genre littéraire, et simultanément, d'observer un phénomène capital de la culture européenne : l'émergence de l'individu et sa disparition en cours.
