Abstract

Food and environmental Safety, the Economics of Disease Control, epidemic analysis and control strategies

Objective

The aim of this lecture is to illustrate the role of pathogens and the control methods on the quality of food and on the environment and discuss the various scenarios from an economical point of view considering the risk assessment for both human consumption as well as for the environment, and sustainable disease management. Additionally the students should be able to analyze different disease control options and their connection to economic thresholds using epidemiological data.

Content

Topics covered will include: Risks posed by plant pathogens themselves and by the control methods (fungicides, biocontrol agents) to products (food safety), to production (economical aspects), to the agro-ecosystem and the environment. Typology of epidemics and their analysis will illustrate the efficiency of all potential control strategies
