Abstract

Theory and application of breeding methods. Methods to estimate genetic parameters and breeding values. Theory of selection and methods to estimate selection response. Special aspects of breeding of different species of livestock. Application of breeding nethods in breeding programmes.

Objective

Knowledge of important breeding methods and their application on simple examples. Interpretation of estimated breeding parameters. Identify and distinguish peculiarities of breeding between species of livestock. Knowledge of structure and organisation of livestock in Switzerland. Show application of breeding methods in breeding programmes.

Content

Genetic polymorphisms and their application in animal breeding. Genetic relationship, inbreeding, crossbreeding. Method to estimate genetic and environmental variances, heritability, genetic correlation, selection response, breeding values. Special aspects of breeding different species of livestock. Assignments.
