Content
1. Structures and functions of proteins. Protein modifications, protein domains, Structure-function relationships for hemoglobin, allosteric regulation, molecular diseases. Isolation and separation of proteins. 2. Enzymology: Properties of enzymes, measurements of enzyme activities, enzyme kinetics, enzyme regulation (proenzyme, isozyme, covalent modifications) 3. Biological membranes. Isolation of cellular organelles, of membranes. Physicochemical properties of membrane constituents, Structure and asymmetry of membranes, membrane transport. 4. Carbohydrate metabolism. Carbohydrate catabolism in the cytosol by glycolysis, pentose phosphate shunt. Anabolism: gluconeogenesis from amino acids and fatty acids ( plants, microorganisms). Protein degradation, elimination of nitrogen. 5. Energy metabolism in microorganisms. Energy conservation. TCA cycle, Aerobic and anaerobic energy metabolism.
