Abstract
The course includes two modules. 1. Requirements of different population groups; the module deals with dietary reference values and the spezial requirements of infants, children, adolescents and the elderly. 2. Diet in relation to health; discusses foods and food components that influence chronic desease (obesity, diabetes, coronary heart desease, cancer and osteoporosis).
Objective
These modules are designed to help pharmacists understand the nutrient composition of special foods for different population goups and how certain foods, food components and healthy life style can help in the prevention of chronic desease.
Content
The human nutrition course is divided into two modules. The first 'The nutrition of different population groups' examines nutrition through the life cycle and includes the nutrient requirements during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. It also includes an evaluation of the special food products designed for these population groups (including infant formula, weaning foods, snack foods and sports foods) and of nutrition issues such as breast feeding, food allergies, eating disorders and Third World nutrition. The second module 'Diet and Health' examines the current views on the extent to which diet can help to prevent diseases such as coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity and anaemia. It also includes an evaluation of weight management methods and the recently developed functional foods (foods with an added health benefit).
