Abstract

This course covers common numerical algorithms and statistical methodsused by chemicalengineers to solve typical problems arising in industrial and researchpractice.

Objective

This course covers common numerical algorithms and statistical methods used by chemical engineers to solve typical problems arising in industrial and research practice. The focus is on application of these algorithms to real world problems, while the underlaying mathematical principles are also explained. The MATLAB environment is adopted to integrate computation, visualization and programming.

Content

Topics covered: Part I: Numerical Methods: - computer arithmetic, roundoff errors and elementary propagation of errors. - numerical methods for solving scalar equations (fix point iteration, Newton method and the secant method) - Systems of linear equations - Systems of non-linear equations - Ordinary differential equations (non sitff and stiff): initial value problem and twopoint boundary value problems. Part II: Statistical Methods: - Data analysis and regression methods - Statistical experimental design - Multivariate analysis of spectra
