Abstract

This lecture deals with security problems which emerge with the ever stronger significance of communication networks, and specifically the Internet, in all aspects of life. The goal is to raise the awareness for vulnerabilities in the IT infrastructure and to know which tools and mechanisms may be used to mitigate the problem arising.

Objective

During this course, students learn about security requirements of today's IT infrastructures and systems. The lecture gives an overview and discusses technologies, algorithms, and standards that can be used to fullfil those requirements

Content

he lectures focusses on problems that are caused by the ubiquitous interconnectivity of processes of our private, professional, and public life provided by the Internet. The goal is to develop an understanding of common weaknesses of IT infrastructures, and to introduce tools that can be used to correct those weaknesses. For this purpose both finished products such as PGP or S/MIME and systems such as those for firewalling and intrusion detection are examined. Real systems are presented, and typical forms of attack and means of defense in the networked world are provided.
