Content

This course offers an introduction to the basic elements of a history of European architecture based on its development since the late 19th century. The main focus is on the paradigm of ‘modernism’ since this development had great impact on the 20th century. No attempt will be made to give a full or, even less so, comprehensive account of history. Rather, the course aims at examining different important key trends by studying specific chapters and primary texts. The events of modernism which are, from a current perspective, celebrated as isolated highlights, will consciously not be viewed as such, but rather treated as part of a complex, continuous development.
