Content

Seventh Semester: Basic Concepts of Architectural Theory: The ‘building blocks’ of the theory of architecture - those concepts which are thought to determine form in the design process - are tested for their appropriateness and applicability. Beginning with current attempts at revising the idea of the ‘truth of materials’, the course investigates the historical construct of the significance of materials. The term ‘place’ (Ort) has a strategic significance in the context of its role in the debate on regionalism. Other terms as well - often used in architectural discourse rather carelessly and without much thought, such as ‘function’ or ‘tradition’ - are problematized. Finally, the relevance of the question of style for today’s architecture is investigated.
