Abstract

The purpose of this course is, to get insights in the relevance of and the dealing with ecological aspects in developing countries; to enhance the understanding of the forces, which influence ecological measures; to learn about instruments, process management, research operations and to become familiar with a structured approach to analyse and influence politics.

Objective

To get insights in the relevance of and the dealing with ecological aspects in development cooperation and in developing countries. To enhance the understanding of the forces, the components and the processes, which influence the design and the implementation of ecological measures. To learn about instruments, process management, research operations, impediments and improvements of political environments and about multilateral negotiations and agreements. To become familiar with a structured approach to analyse and influence politics, looking among others at governance, social organisation, legal issues and institutions.

Content

The course shall build on a range of case studies, starting from the setting up, specifying problems and potentials, highlighting procedures, experiences and outcomes, illustrating change management. The analysis of the cases shall demonstrate, what was crucial in the evolution of the exposed cases, what were key elements and interventions. Special emphasis will be given to natural resources management. Topics which shall be included are: - Sustainable use of sloping land - Community based natural resource management - Rural development - Enhancement of biodiversity - Plant genetic resources in the international arena - Plant protection - Millennium development goals, interactions between poverty and the environment - Clean development mechanism - Partnerships in mountain development
