Abstract

The lecture gives a detailed overview over the 30 insect orders occurring in Central Europe. The main emphasis is put on biology (nutrition, reproduction ...), on morphological and ethological adaptations and on the diversity of the different insect orders. Other topics included are the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic relationships of the insect orders.

Objective

(i) Basic knowledge on biology, morphology and systematics of all insect orders occurring in Central Europe. (ii) Insights into functional interrelations between morphology/ethology and biology (nourishment, reproduction...). (iii) Insight that insects are extremely diverse on both phylogenetic and habitat level and that they play an eminent ecological role in almost all ecosystems. (iv) Knowledge of forms: the students are capable of identifying insects in the field down to the order level. (v) Knowledge of morphological terms which forms the basis for identification of insects down to the species level.

Content

Morphological characteristics, diversity, phylogenetic relationships, biology (nutrition, reproduction...) and morphological/ethological adaptations of the roughly 30 insect orders occurring in Central Europe.
