Dynamics of collisionless systems
Last Updated: 2026-02-05 15:02:30
Abstract
This course describes the dynamics of collisionless, gravitational systems such as galaxies and dark matter halos.
Content
Topics discussed include potential theory, the theory of orbits, the collisionless Boltzmann equation, the Jeans equations, disk stability, violent relaxation, phase mixing, dynamical friction and kinetic theory. Particular emphasis will be on dynamical modelling of galaxies (using kinematic data to constrain the dynamical structure and the presence of dark matter and black holes).

A script will be made available (see website for download)
Literature
The course will closely follow the excellent textbook `Galactic Dynamics' by Binney & Tremaine (Princeton University Press). Students are strongly encouraged to buy a copy of this book.
