Abstract
To familiarize with the intricacies of forest ecosystems in general and woody plants in particular; phenological and morphological aspects of trees and forest in spring and summer; bud break; leaf development, and flowering in the forest, on individual trees, and on individual twigs; characteruzation and identification of selected wody plants.
Objective
To familiarize with the intricacies of forest ecosystems in general and woody plants in particular by means of inquisitive in situ observation and subsequent theoretical interpretation.
Content
Virtual excursions followed by identical real excursions to the forest in the neighbourhood of ETH Hönggerberg; phenological and morphological aspects of trees and forest in spring and summer; bud break, leaf development, and flowering in the forest, on individual trees, and on individual twigs; characterization and identification of selected woody plant species in both winter and summer aspects; identification of deadwood; scientific significance of the English language as a crucial pre-requisite for the overall understanding of woody plants. Further topics depending on the stage of development of the vegetation.
