Abstract
We look at contemporary experiences of time and space with - and after - the moving-image, especially material and conceptual shifts when artists work: linear narrative, networked media, the internet, and other ideas of interaction. Architectural space is seen as a broad configuration of environments that situate, and influence techne- the interplay of technology and affect in artistic production.
Objective
Students will learn about and practice artistic procedures from film, video art, net art, sottware, and video games, while being introduced to concepts from philosophy, media studies, and culture. Discussions will foreground experience, procedure, and infrastructure as a lens for evaluating moving-image encounters. By examining the promises (what media claims to offer), affordances (what it enables or facilitates), and failures (where it falls short, but also productive failure), students will bridge theoretical concepts with technical skills. Workshops in class and artistic development outside of class will enable the flow of feedback and exchange between thinking and making,
Content
The course will situate concepts, cultural phenomena, and artistic works that pay attention to underlying contemporary and contentious conceptions of time and space. Time, here, is exposed and challenged in its familiar characterization as progressive, linear, and evenly distributed (technologically and historically) by delving into counter practices, hacks/errors, extensions and duration. Expanded conceptions of architecture as spatial and environmental construction will identify the entanglements of the material and immaterial, the virtual and the physical. Discursive formats of lectures and discussions will be held, alongwith material formats of tooling and tutorials. Together, these will draw together theoretical, practical and poetic explorations and experiments.
