Abstract
The ability to write effective research papers, conference abstracts, and grant or fellowship applications is crucial for successful academic careers. This course therefore systematically teaches the structural, strategic, and practical aspects of academic writing with a focus on the field of molecular biology.
Objective
The course provides participants with fundamental knowledge to navigate academia and the academic publishing system in molecular biology. A major focus is set on understanding + applying structural, strategic, and practical aspects of academic writing: • academic publishing (journals, formats, impact factor, peer review, social media) • effective narratives that target the right audience • function and composition of the different parts of research papers and abstracts • basics of grant + fellowship applications and their specific features • design and composition of effective scientific illustrations
Content
The course is composed of weekly lectures that are occasionally complemented by face-to-face discussions with special guests such as professional editors of leading scientific journals. Besides these meetings, the course is based on weekly homework that consolidates the learning success with exercises oriented at the participants’ individual research interests.
