Abstract

Introduction to investigation methods in glaciology with both theory and experimental application. The students design, plan, and evaluate their individual projects, and present the results to their colleagues and the instructors.

Objective

Content

The course covers methodologies and techniques to analyse physical conditions of glaciers and their evolution. Basic measurement techniques of surveying, drilling as well as working with sensors and data loggers are introduced. Covered fields include topographical setting, mass balance, glacier fluctuations, ice flow and glacier hydrology. The course starts with an introduction in May at the end of the spring semester and is followd by 9 days in August including lectures at ETH and field work on Rhonegletscher.
