Abstract
This course aims to give a general introduction on the most important approaches concerning the estimates of pressure and temperature conditions in metamorphic terrains. In particular, pressure-temperature grids, conventional geothermobarometers and metamorphic phase diagrams (pseudosections) are introduced and used to reconstruct the pressure-temperature evolution for case study samples.
Objective
This course provides an overview on the most used methods in modern geothermobarometry. Students will be introduced to estimates of metamorphic conditions in the field, to calculations of P and T using conventional geothermobarometers and to software for calculating phase equilibria and stable mineral assemblages with thermodynamic data. Advantages and disadvantages of each approach will be discussed with the objective that students will be able to infer the metamorphic evolution of a rock/terrain.
