Abstract
This course introduces fundamentals in cell-/tissue material interactions relevant for the application of biomaterials in tissue engineering. Concepts of tissue engineering, 3D tissue models, cell transplantation and stem cell biology as well as applications of biomaterials for tissue repair and tissue engineering (in e.g. cardiovascular system, bone, skin, cartilage...) are discussed.
Objective
Understanding of cell-/tissue specific requirements of biomaterials for their application in tissue engineering (TE). Knowing challenges of using biomaterials in TE and opportunities that new material-based concepts can provide in tissue repair and regeneration.
Content
This class continues with applications of biomaterials and devices introduced in Biocompatible Materials. Fundamentals in blood coagulation, thrombosis, immune system, inflammation, foreign body reaction on the level of the entire body and on the molecular level are introduced. Concepts of tissue engineering, 3D tissue models, cell transplantation and stem cell biology as well as applications of biomaterials for tissue repair and tissue engineering in the cardiovascular system, skeletal muscle, tendons and ligaments, bone, skin and cartilage are introduced.
