Abstract
Geological Mapping in the Alps in pairs with an assigned supervisor. Common activities are an introductory excursion, and a final presentation of the report and map, either in the field or in class. The scheduled two weeks are set at the beginning and end of the summer, to allow interested students to add some mapping days.
Objective
Learning how to map a geological complex area, including superficial deposits, in a temperate setting with important vegetational cover. These conditions will be experienced by most students during their future professional life. Familiarise with the geology of the Alps.
Content
Geological mapping in groups of 2 in areas of the Alps spanning from cristalline basement to (meta)sediments. Each pair will choose the area, between the proposed ones, based on their specific choice; defining the stratigraphy by distinguishing mappable formations and compare it with the proposed subdivisions and nomenclature; sedimentological and structural analysis; reconstruction of the history of the area; final presentation of map, strat column and cross sections, with feedback from instructors. The handing in of the final group report will be agreed with the instructors.
