Abstract

Students formulate and investigate a scientific question within a field-based research project. They collect, analyze, and interpret relevant data using appropriate scientific methods. Students communicate their findings in both an oral presentation and a written scientific report, demonstrating their ability to plan, conduct, and critically reflect on an independent research process.

Objective

After completing the course, students are able to: • Formulate and justify a scientific research question in Population and Evolutionary Biology based on field observations or literature. • Design and carry out a small-scale field project, applying appropriate methods for data collection and documentation. • Analyse and interpret empirical data to draw evidence-based conclusions and relate findings to relevant ecological and evolutionary concepts. • Collaborate effectively in research teams, sharing tasks and integrating diverse perspectives. • Communicate research processes and results clearly and concisely in both a scientific report and oral presentation. • Reflect critically on methodological choices, data limitations, and ethical considerations in field research.

Content

This one-week field course provides students with hands-on experience in Population and Evolutionary Biology. Working in small groups, students design and carry out a mini research project from formulating a scientific question to collecting, analyzing, and interpreting field data. Throughout the course, supervisors provide guidance and feedback during the design and implementation of the projects. Students practice ecological sampling, species identification, and basic statistical analysis, and link their observations to ecological and evolutionary theory. The course takes place from (01.06.-05.06.2026). Basic knowledge of ecology, taxonomy, and statistics is required.
