Abstract

This course is designed to support doctoral students in Computer Science as they develop their technical and academic writing. This course will guide students through the essentials of writing clearly, appropriately, and effectively, whether it’s for their Doctoral Plan or for their first, or next, conference paper.

Objective

Over five interactive workshops (each consisting of four lessons), doctoral students will build practical skills for technical and academic writing. By the end of the course, students will be better able to - write clearer, more reader-friendly sentences and paragraphs with a logical flow and structure - organize research-based articles more effectively and coherently - recognize key genre conventions in Computer Science writing - give and receive constructive feedback, from both the lecturer and peers, on three text extracts of their choice - use AI tools responsibly and ethically by experimenting with prompts and critically evaluating AI-generated or AI-edited text

Content

Throughout the course, students will complete three short writing assignments between sessions, ideally linked to their current research projects. These may include sections of a Doctoral Plan, research articles, or conference papers. Each assignment receives personalized feedback from both the lecturer and peers, helping students refine their writing step by step. The course includes five interactive sessions, each focusing on a key aspect on academic writing in Computer Science: Session 1: Exploring model texts, self-study tools, and strategies for writing reader-friendly sentences Session 2: Building strong paragraphs and creating a smooth flow between ideas Session 3: Integrating sources and data commentaries; writing clear and appropriate methods and results Session 4: Developing effective introductions and conclusions Session 5: Writing impactful abstracts and titles while sharpening your punctuation and style Every session features group activities and peer review, encouraging collaboration, practical learning, and shared insights to help students strengthen their academic writing with confidence.
