Abstract
The course introduces the fundamentals of microfluidic technology and explores various applications in microbiology and chemistry through hands-on experience and live demonstrations.
Objective
Familiarization with the basics of microfluidics and with some applications of this technology in microbiology and chemistry.
Content
The course covers the physics of fluid transport at small scales and the principles of microfluidic device design and fabrication. It also provides examples of microfluidic studies in areas such as chemistry, optofluidics, microbial growth, motility, chemotaxis, and microbial interactions. It includes practical training on setting up a typical microfluidic experiment, along with flow visualization, image acquisition, and data analysis. The course will be held from June 15 to June 19, 2026, at ETH Hönggerberg in the HIF building. Mornings will be dedicated to in-class lectures, while afternoons (Monday through Thursday) will focus on hands-on experience, live demonstrations, and a group activity.
