Last Updated: 2026-07-21 00:35:31

Abstract

This course introduces musculoskeletal simulation techniques used in movement science, clinical and orthopaedics biomechanics. Students gain hands-on experience with modelling tools and learn how to apply simulations to real-world health science applications.

Objective

- Understand the principles of musculoskeletal modelling and simulation; - Practice steps in personalizing generic musculoskeletal models as well as subject-specific modelling approaches; - Understand and apply validation and verification methods in musculoskeletal modelling; - Interpret and critically evaluate simulation outcomes for health science applications; - Apply simulation tools to analyse joint and muscle function; - Apply simulation tools to assess prosthetic joint functionality; - Understand the principles of in silico modelling techniques for surgical planning applications.

Content

The course covers musculoskeletal system modelling, motion capture data integration, muscle force estimation, and joint load analysis using tools such as OpenSim. Case studies include clinical scenarios in orthopaedics, rehabilitation, and assistive device design. The course includes lectures, demos, and practical assignments.
