Abstract

This block course introduces the planning, layout, and economic evaluation of cable logging operations in steep terrain. Students gain practical experience in yarding corridor layout and field staking, apply cable logging planning software, conduct stump‑to‑landing cost and contribution margin analyses, and practice tendering, supervising, and accepting contractor-based cable logging operations.

Objective

By the end of the module, students are able to: • Plan a cable logging operation and effectively apply suitable planning software at the project design level (e.g. Seilaplan by WSL). • Design and implement an appropriate yarding corridor layout in the field for a cable logging operation. • Prepare a contribution margin calculation for a cable logging operation. • Prepare tender documents for cable logging projects, supervise contractor operated yarding operations, and carry out quality control and acceptance. • Professionally present aspects of cable logging systems in relation to specific operational contexts. • Correctly perform contribution margin analyses in cable based harvesting operations.
