Abstract

This elective provides a rigorous theoretical and practical exploration of the evolving landscape of architectural education. Students will identify and critically discuss the seminal theories and historical concepts that have shaped contemporary plural approaches of architectural education. Next to inputs by the lecturer, students will explore these major movements through their own enquiry.

Objective

Identify and critically discuss key theories and concepts that have shaped contemporary architectural pedagogy. Explain and evaluate the concept of competence orientation and its implications for learning environments, and apply it in a concrete course element. Design a student centered course structure, applying appropriate didactic strategies and formats. Differentiate between various teacher roles, selecting and adjusting them appropriately to different teaching and learning situations. Situate and articulate their own pedagogical position by reflecting on and comparing their personal educational trajectories with the pedagogical histories discussed in class.

Type
graded semester performance
The final grade is determined by two equally weighted components:1. Participation and Practical Engagement (50%) Active presence is fundamental; students may miss a maximum of three sessions, provided a medical or official certificate is presented. This component includes a mandatory group presentation (three students per group), where teams present a specific pedagogical movement for 15 minutes. Furthermore, students must participate in a mandatory peer review process. In this exercise, groups evaluate their peers using assessment criteria and feedback principles developed collectively during class sessions.2. Individual Written Reflection (50%) Students are required to submit a short written reflection that synthesises the course’s three pillars. This paper critically examines the pedagogical movement explored in their group presentation, contextualised against their personal educational path and evolving teaching position.
