Theory of Architecture: Situated modernisms
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:07:21
Abstract
The seminar aims to complexify common place understandings of modernism outside the West, by shifting the lens to the local material conditions, agencies, and cultures that shaped its forms and implementation in Cairo between 1850 and 1950.
Objective
The seminar proposes to discuss the rise and development of modern Egyptian architecture and planning in their own terms, rather than as by-products of colonialism and imperialism. The sessions will critically examine a series of issues, such as local patronage, the politics of style, and the domestication of knowledge among others, by looking at specific buildings, urban developments and architectural writings of the period under study.
