Focus Work of History and Theory in Architecture (GTA)
Vertiefungsarbeit Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur (GTA)
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:07:23
Abstract
Focus Works are carried out within the fields of expertise represented by the institutes of D-ARCH. While topics may be proposed by students, they are ultimately defined by the institute’s professors in consultation with the students. A Focus Work may build on an elective course, connect to core course themes, or be developed independently.
Objective
The learning objectives of the Focus Work are to define a clear project theme, outline its methodological approach, and articulate the expected gain in knowledge; to apply appropriate research or analytical methods; to develop and execute a creative, craft-based, or design-oriented project according to the agreed programme; and to demonstrate deepened understanding through independent inquiry, critical reflection, and a well-structured presentation of both process and results.
Content
The Chair supports Vertiefungsarbeiten / Focus Works that engage with the history and theory of urban design. We occasionally publish predefined topics for students interested in contributing to ongoing research projects. However, we also welcome self-defined topics at any time, provided they relate to the history and theory of urban design and deepen knowledge acquired in one of our courses. Priority will be given to topics closely aligned with our research interests and current projects. Students are therefore encouraged to consult our “Ongoing Research” overview ( https://repository.avermaete.ethz.ch/research/ ) as well as previous examples of Vertiefungsarbeiten / Focus Works ( https://repository.avermaete.ethz.ch/education/focus-works/ ). For an overview of the topics we currently prioritise, please see https://avermaete.arch.ethz.ch/education/vertiefungsarbeiten.html/ .
