Abstract

The focus work consist in documenting and analyzing a historic built structure, including surveying, mapping of finding and traces, and final evaluation

Objective

Students are able to document, understand and evaluate a historic building structure.

Content

The student will visit a limited number of historic structures (ca. 3) and get a first impression of what is there. Together with the tutor, the precise parts to be documented will then be fixed, along with the method of surveying (ranging from manual to digital methods). The structure is then surveyed, yielding a set of plans (or, if required, 3d models) that can serve as a basis for mapping of all findings. Possible findings include traces of stone- or woodworking, hidden construction details, carpenter's or mason's marks, inscriptions, traces of repairs and lost parts. All these findings are mapped geometrically, and documented photographically. Precise guidelines on how to proceed will be provided by the institute. The student will finally submit the plans and documentation, together with a concise written report that describes the structure and, within the limits of what is possible in a student work, evaluates the structure and relates it to its construction time, region, and typology.
