Artistic Methodologies

Abstract

The course proposes that artistic methodologies constitute a distinct mode of inquiry — rigorous, speculative, and generative on its own terms. Through presentations, artists and researchers introduce manifold approaches to art-based work, drawing on various multidisciplinary fields to explore how artistic thinking can expand, critically and creatively reorient, and deepen the terms of a practice.

Objective

The course develops and pushes students' capacity to recognize and work with artistic methodologies as distinct epistemic practices. Through sustained engagement with works and practitioners, students build critical and analytical (as well as emancipatory and inclusive) frameworks for understanding how artistic processes produce meaning and open new terms of inquiry. They leave the course with expanded tools for reflecting on and articulating the methodological dimensions of their own practice in architecture studies.

Content

This course approaches artistic practice as a decisive field of method: asking not only what artists make, but how making itself generates knowledge and related epistemologies. Artistic methodologies are hereby not exclusively instruments of resolution but of opening — practices that sustain inquiry rather than concluding it, where arrival is always a beginning rather than an end. During the course, a cast of lecturers situates diverse artistic practices and addresses underlying methods both conceptually and materially. Practical and theoretical investigations, poetic and analytical explorations, collective exchange and experiment are some of the approaches introduced — tracing how materials and techniques play a significant–largely underestimated–role in shaping novel ideas, how images circulate, and how concepts travel and are re-negotiated each time they come forth.
