Abstract

This lecture will provide an introduction to computational techniques that are useful in the analysis of different types of sensory signals. The focus will be on the mathematical/technical aspects, and on practical implementations, usually with MATLAB. A brief biological/mechanical overview of the corresponding sensory system will also be presented.

Objective

The goal is to provide hands-on computational knowledge of a range of techniques which are relevant in the study of sensory systems.

Content

Currently the following topics are planned: - Analytical description of linear and angular movements (Vestibular system) - Fourier transforms (Auditory system) - Neural networks (Visual system) - Control systems (Multistage processing of sensory signals: Signal transduction – central processing – movement generation) - Finite element techniques (Detailed descriptions of auditory or vestibular system)

Resources

Lecture Notes

A short script will be published, to facilitate taking notes during the lecture. It will NOT be designed to serve as a full, self-complete reference to the lecture.

Literature

For the underlying biology: E. R. Kandel, J. H. Schwartz, and T. M. Jessell. Principles of Neural Science, McGraw-Hill, 2000 [ISBN: 0838577016 (Hardcover), oder 0071120009 (int stud ed)] For an Introduction to Control Systems, a script based on a lecture from DA Robinson can be recommended: http://www.sensory-systems.ethz.ch/Lectures/PDF/Control_Systems.pdf More will be added later ….
