Abstract
The course examines rivers and their ecosystems, human impacts, and sustainable management. Students apply interdisciplinary approaches, discuss case studies, and take responsibility in groups by preparing a presentation, moderating a session, and writing a report.
Objective
After completing the course, students will be able to explain the functioning of river ecosystems and describe their ecological properties. ➝ Subject-specific competencies: Concepts & theories (ecological foundations, interrelations) apply concepts of sustainable river management and evaluate their effectiveness in different contexts. ➝ Subject-specific competencies: Techniques & technologies (management approaches) ➝ Method-specific competencies: Decision-making, problem-solving transfer principles to concrete case studies and compare possible management approaches. ➝ Method-specific competencies: Analytical skills, problem-solving ➝ Personal competencies: Critical thinking analyze scientific questions in group discussions, contribute arguments, and organize collaboration responsibly. ➝ Social competencies: Communication, cooperation & teamwork ➝ Personal competencies: Self-management, responsibility

1) Start of lecture/ organizational matters (working groups and methods) 2) Introduction to the Water Protection Act (GSchG) and moderation techniques 3) Altered discharge and temperature regimes in rivers and lakes 4) Restoration of sediment dynamics 5) River widening 6) Effect of restoration projects 7) Waters under climate change 8) Water and health 9) Project implementation/ realization 10) Visitor guidance/ recreational use 11) Fish movement in multipurpose watercourses 12) Floodplain management (and restoration) 13) Mire protection 14) Conclusion/ evaluation
