Abstract

The two World Wars and the Cold War serve as a starting point for the examination of the period from 1890 (destitution of Bismarck and "new course") to the demise of the eastern defence alliance in 1991. Adopting a global perspective, we show and analyse historical trends, interactions and connexions which have become manifest in today's world.
