Abstract

This course combines Limnology (the study of inland waters in its broad sense) with ecological and evolutionary concepts. It deals with flowing and standing waters.

Objective

During this course, student get an overview of the world's freshwater ecosystems, their biodiversity, structure and functioning. Students will gain an understanding of the major challenges facing aquatic ecosystems (e.g. extinctions, invasions, pollution, climate change) and will learn about current approaches to deal with these challenges (e.g. conservation genetics). They will also learn to apply theory and conceptual knowledge to real world case studies in both lakes and rivers.

Content

The lectures cover the ecology and evolution of aquatic organisms in lentic and lotic waters. Topics include: species richness and distribution patterns, biotic interactions, ecosystem functions and evolutionary adaptation in freshwater ecosystems. Applied case studies and experiments testing ecological and evolutionary processes in freshwaters. The lectures are given by Anita Narwani (Eawag), Florian Altermatt (UZH, Eawag), Francesco Pomati (Eawag), Alexandra Weber (Eawag) and specialists from the Aquatic Ecology department of Eawag and University of Zurich.
