Abstract

This course for doctoral students in the Health Ethics & Policy Lab covers academia essentials and troubleshooting. It is an interactive seminar focusing on time management, productive writing, feedback handling, and tools like LaTeX. Students learn from and support each other and gain an overview and resources for future academic challenges.

Objective

The course will equip attendees with an overview of the necessary soft skills to successfully complete their doctoral degree, to identify and navigate relevant resources, and start their academic career. The specific learning objectives of the course are: - Become aware of the different components of academic work (research, teaching, service, …) and be able to adequately prioritize them in light of personal or external expectations. - Reflect on challenges encountered during the doctoral degree that are not (purely) related to research topics or methods and identify their sources. - Identify strategies for dealing with the aforementioned challenges and evaluate their characteristics. - Assess the extent to which different general-purpose tools might be able to improve one’s workflows and become familiar with their basic functionalities to allow for the further independent use of the tools.

Content

The course starts with an introductory session that provides an overview of the course’s structure and content. This session is also meant as a first opportunity for students to communicate their specific interests and needs such that they can be incorporated in the schedule. The course continues with a session covering the essentials of getting started in academia, which amounts to an overview of things to keep in mind and resources for general advice but also includes social aspects such as developing a proper working relationship with one’s supervisor. Afterwards, the course delves into concrete topics that the students will frequently encounter in their day-to-day academic work such as time management, applying and going to conferences as well as writing and publishing. Subsequently, the course comprises several sessions focusing on general-purpose tools that are useful irrespective of disciplines or research questions and, thus, likely to improve the students’ workflows. More specifically, a first session will deal with reference managers, a second one with the word processing software LaTeX, and a third one with the data analysis software Python. The course concludes with a session dealing with aspects that are relevant during but also beyond the doctoral degree, as students start their careers in academia, in particular the specificities of the academic job market and of academic job applications.
