Abstract
Current Challenges in Plant Breeding brings together MSc and doctoral students with leading national and international experts, as well as stakeholders from science, industry and society, to discuss a topical challenge in plant breeding.Working in small, tutor-guided teams, students investigate selected aspects of the chosen topic and prepare a scientific presentation for a public seminar.
Objective
The educational objectives cover subject- and method-specific, as well as social and personal competencies: Subject-specific competencies • Apply and deepen advanced scientific knowledge in plant breeding • Critically evaluate current challenges, new methods and concepts in plant breeding • Relate theoretical insights to practical plant breeding and identify opportunities for collaboration and research projects Method-specific competencies • Conduct independent literature research and synthesize findings into clear arguments • Critically analyze scientific evidence and evaluate alternative solutions • Prepare and deliver a structured, evidence-based scientific presentation Social competencies • Collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams • Present and defend findings in a public seminar, responding constructively to expert and stakeholder feedback • Engage in science-based dialogue with diverse audiences, fostering understanding and trust Personal competencies • Manage own learning process, from problem definition to public communication • Reflect on ethical and societal dimensions of plant breeding methods • Build and strengthen networks with peers, experts, and practitioners in the field
Content
Interesting topics related to plant breeding will be selected in close collaboration with the working group for plant breeding of the Swiss Society of Agronomy (SSA).

Current Challenges in Plant Breeding
This course is composed by two parts:
- a compulsory information event, in which the preparation and task assignment will take place on 13th November 2026
- a seminar, in which the group tasks will be presented, which takes place in mid January 2027.
