Abstract
This course introduces advanced topics in computational mechanics, focusing onmodern methods for modeling nonlinear problems at the continuum scale. Topics include contact, fracture, and coupled problems. Students gain both theoreticalinsight and practical skills to address complex boundary value problems in solidmechanics.
Objective
This course aims to introduce students to the formulation and implementation of advanced computational techniques for complex solid mechanics problems at the continuum scale. Students will learn to model constrained and unconstrained minimization problems, simulate contact and fracture phenomena, and address coupled physical processes such as diffusion-driven damage. They will gain hands-on experience with modern tools like JAX for automatic differentiation and PETSc for scalable numerical solvers. By the end of the course, students will have built a solid theoretical foundation and be equipped to independently develop, analyze, and apply computational methods relevant to their research or engineering challenges.
