Abstract

Cellular homeostasis maintains internal stability while adapting to changing molecular or environmental stress stimuli. This process involves the entire cell and is fundamental to normal cellular physiology while its dysregulation causes disease. Students will study examples of how stressors alter the transcriptome and proteome leading to stress adaptation or disease.

Objective

In this course students will be exposed to mixed learning modes. Frontal lectures will be combined with student-led method seminars to stimulate critical thinking of methodologies and research questions in the domain of cellular homeostasis. By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. understand the broad molecular consequences of stress on multiple cellular pathways to maintain homeostasis, 2. discuss selected methods used to address specific biological questions, and 3. develop stress-related research questions and apply appropriate methods for their analysis.

Content

The course will involve a combination of frontal lectures and active learning elements to promote student development in defining and experimentally addressing research questions in the domain of cellular homeostasis. Students will meet with lecturers and tutors during seven double lecture hours throughout the semester. Frontal lectures combined with student presentation will provide the opportunity to discuss current topics and research strategies in the domain of cellular homeostasis and cellular stress response. The course structure incorporates time for independent student learning. Students will develop domain knowledge through guided independent work and report their findings to course participants through student-led methods seminars and during final presentations and discussions.
