Intellectual Property for PhD Students

Abstract
This course introduces PhD students to intellectual property (IP) and IP rights. It covers the basics of IP law, how IP rights can be strategically used to transform ideas and inventions into valuable innovations, and how they underpin the business model of a spin-off company.
Objective
This course enables PhD students to know the different IP rights and how to use them; see the difference between open source and proprietary software; know the ETH Zurich-internal regulations on IP; understand the importance of IP rights for spin-off companies; and apply the learned knowledge to draft an IP strategy for one’s own PhD project or for a case study.
