Physical Geodesy
Physikalische Geodäsie
Last Updated: 2026-06-03 00:14:41
Abstract
Physical geodesy studies the Earth's gravity field and its relation to the shape, rotation, and mass distribution. It provides the physical foundation for determining precise positions, heights, and the Earth's reference surfaces such as the geoid.Temporal changes in the gravitational field are important indicators of global (climate) change.
Objective
- Apply various altitude definitions in the relevant areas of application - Critically examine altitude specifications and definitions - Explain various methods of observing the Earth's gravitational field and provide examples of their application - Understand the derivation of spherical harmonic basis functions and explain their relevance - Visualize satellite observations - Explain the significance of global observations of gravity field changes and interpret various results
